Established in 1986, FER’s institutional mandate is to conduct research and produce research based documents regarding ecological issues with the perspective of sustainable development and greater participation of local communities within the Mekong Region. |

TERRA a project under FER, was established in 1991 to focus on issues concerning the environment and local communities within the Mekong Region. TERRA works to support the network of NGOs and people’s organisations in the Mekong Region, encouraging exchange and alliance-building, and drawing on the experience of development and environment issues in Thailand. |

China is fast failing the good-neighbour test in the current Mekong River crisis. With the vital waterway at its lowest point in a generation, officials in both Beijing and the provinces are not participating in the search for solutions to this problem. It is not a new phenomenon. For close to a decade, there has been widespread criticism of China's actions along the Mekong. The current emergency, with millions of lives affected, simply adds urgency to the problem. |

Residents of Chiang Rai plan to rally outside the Chinese embassy in Bangkok next month to protest against Beijing's dam management, which they say has caused severe water shortages this year and heavy floods two years ago along the Mekong River.

Like most rivers in this country which are fast drying up under the scorching summer sun, the Mekong is no exception. This otherwise mighty river has shrunk substantially in size and its once forceful flow is now down to a trickle in many lower stretches of the river, to the extent that navigation has become impossible.
