Public statement: “Stop Mekong Mainstream Dams - Stop All Investment” by representatives from Mekong local people and NGOs

On 30 September 2013, Lao PDR submitted a “Notification” via Mekong River Commission (MRC) to other member countries, indicating its intent to proceed with the Don Sahong Hydropower Project. But Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam expressed concerns over immediate impacts posed by the 256MW Don Sahong Dam on Mekong’s most abundant aquatic environment known as Siphandone and local communities. The three countries demanded Lao PDR to seek for “Prior Consultation” and conduct further feasibility study and more thorough environmental and social impact assessment of the project.

This regional public forum aims to improve understanding of the public all relevant actors in Thailand and other Mekong countries about the Don Sahong Hydropower Project. It further calls for an emphasis on the studies of Mekong dam projects and their impacts on aquatic resources and local livelihoods in affected area conducted by local communities and experts as a crucial factor for any decision on large-scale hydropower projects.
