China begins construction of nuclear power plant

Beijing (VNA) - Construction of a nuclear power plant began on August 18 in China’s northeastern province of Liaoning, that when completed will make it the first of its kind in the region.

According to China’s News Agency (Xinhua), the 6.6 billion USD Hongyanhe nuclear power station will house six generating units, with the first phase of the project to build four of the generating units.

The first unit, that got underway, is expected to become commercially operational by 2012 and then will be joined by the other three units in 2014, by that time the plant should be pumping at 30 billion kWh.

China has said that it plans to raise nuclear power electricity generation to 40 million kW by 2020 from the current 8 million kW.
